Certificate in Filmmaking

Based on a curriculm that has been developed over more than fifteen years, the SFS Certificate in Filmmaking provides a unique learning experience for you to undertake the complete production pathway of making a short film within real world, industry conditions.

Utilising state-of-the-art studio facilities, students will pitch and produce a major film work, uniquely shot on 16mm film.

Working in a large crew environment, you will be allocated a production role on the film. You also have the option to undertake further specialist training throughout the course.

Every film is taken through to completion and the course culminates in a gala screening at the end-of-semester SFS Film Festival.

The Festival, supported by local industry, has launched films that have gone on to screen at film festivals all around the globe, including Academy-Award accredited festivals.

Course Details

The Certificate of Filmmaking is integrated into our Diploma of Screen and Media allowing you to work and learn alongside our International and Local Diploma Students.

The Certificate is made up of a Core Unit - Drama Production - as well as a series of electives, which allow you to gain specialist knowledge in key aspects of filmmaking.

Course Program

The Core Unit – Drama Production.  This includes:

For an additional fee students may also take the following specialist electives:

Course Duration

The Certificate is offered part-time over a 20 week semester.  The minimum course requirement averages at 8 hours per week however with electives and additional production you are able and encouraged to give a greater time commitment to the course and other members of your crew.  There are also specific times during the course that are slated for production shoots, which will require a greater time input.

Credits and Pathways

At the end of the course you will receive a Statement of Attainment in the Sydney Film School Certificate in Filmmaking.

The course also provides you with a minimum of 3 Units of Competency (UOC) towards our Diploma of Screen and Media (CUA51015). Students who complete the Certificate will be offered an additional one year pathway into the Diploma.

Fees for the Certificate must be paid upfront before commencement of the course.
