Alejandra Canales


Alejandra is an award winning filmmaker, graduate from the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and holds a PhD in Creative Arts. Her work has screened in many major festivals both in Australia and internationally, including the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) and the Sydney Film Festival where she was awarded a Dendy Award. Other awards include ATOM award for best documentary, a special mention from the Film Critics of Australia and a nomination for the IF Award Independent Spirit. Additionally, she has been a recipient of numerous competitive scholarships and grants, including the prestigious Ian Potter Cultural Trust. She has taken part in international documentary workshops and residencies such us IDFAcademy in Amsterdam and 5Sur5 in Belgium. She was the Co-Director of the inaugural version of Antenna International Documentary Film Festival 2011 and the creator and curator of DOC_Space.

She has taught several University courses and in remote Aboriginal communities. She is Head of Documentary at Sydney Film School. In her nearly 10 years of teaching at the school she has Executive Produced and supervised several student productions ranging from 7 minutes to half hours, many of which have been exhibited and awarded in national and international film festivals.
